Bonn (DE): Attendees to the recent NAJU Workshop delivered some on the edge surprises in terms of how they responded to ‘The Question’: “What did nature do for you today?”
During an EarthCollective workshop on ‘ecosystem services’, participants were divided into four groups, given a Canon camera, 20 minutes and asked to answer ‘The Question’ in pictures only.
“The most interesting and fun part of the exercise for us was sitting with the participants afterwards and discussing what each image was illustrating” said eyes4earth coordinator Matthew Zylstra. “There were definitely some creative and artistic responses – for us the audience it was mixture of logical interpretation and guesswork. I think the diversity of the responses was definitely stimulated by the cultural diversity of the participants.”
The NAJU conference “Biodiversity on the Edge” was targeted at youth from around the world interested in environmental issues and concepts. The event served as preparation on key topics which would be discussed during the (stop, take a breath) 9th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP9-CBD) international meeting in Bonn held during late May. (We’ve been told that only those who can remember the full name of the event are allowed to attend!).
Reflecting on the “The Question” later in the day, one of the participants remarked, “You realise that you benefit from nature in every way – even though you’re not always aware that you are looking straight at it.”
