Meaningful Nature Experience 0

Surfer’s daemon

By Matthew Zylstra @eyes4earth · On February 22, 2012

This was one of those quirky photo moments that one sometimes unexpectedly gets.

My photographer brother had been capturing some superb surf shots during the event. I borrowed his camera to see if I could snap something half as decent. Unintentionally, I managed it snag this one with one of my first attempts. At first, I was like “d’oh – a bird just flew through as I hit the shutter.”   Then after I looked at the image I was like, “hey, cool –  a bird just flew through as I hit the shutter…”

The bird is also the relatively endangered oyster-catcher which makes it is a nice bonus. This event happened around a time when I had been reading up on Indigenous understandings of animal totems, mirroring in nature and more contemporary views on interspecies communication.

“One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.”
	- William Shakespeare

This quote by Shakespeare speaks to the interconnectedness of all living beings through their shared natural essence. It suggests that a felt experience of ‘nature’ can transcend perceived cultural, social, and species boundaries. Nature, in its raw beauty and presence has, when given a particular kind of attention, the power to evoke universal emotions and stir a sense of commonality among beings. It offers a potent reminder of the fundamental bond that connects all living creatures. Irrespective of our individual backgrounds, ideologies or beliefs, we are all part of the greater tapestry of nature with our pulsing sensing animal bodies.
