Yirrkala (AU): eyes4earth asks ‘The Question’ to Peter Garret AM MP (Australian Minister for the Environment, Heritage & the Arts) on his visit to Yirrkala in northeast Arnhem Land on 23rd July 2008.
As Mr. Garrett notes, it was surprising and unusual to see rain and clouds in this party of the country during the normally sunny ‘Dry season’. Some would say a strange coincidence…
Background information: “The air was thick. Thick with humidity and a slight smattering of rain. Thick with a haunting traditional song welcoming the Prime Minister. Thick with anticipation of history about to be made. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and a large group of his cabinet ministers had arrived in Yirrkala, a small indigenous community in North East Arnhem Land. They were [t]here for a community cabinet meeting. It was a chance for people from all over the region to meet their ministers and ask direct questions.”
